“What is this place?” Carrie trudged along beside him, looking around with interest.

Pax smiled slightly to himself as he walked next to her. She’d moved quickly as soon as she’d decided she was coming with him for this task. For a reason he couldn’t quite explain, he was pleased to see that she’d produced a pair of waterproof hiking boots in a matter of seconds. They looked good on her, and she looked good out there in the woods. Her eyes were the same color as the leaves in midsummer, bringing life to the cold winter forest that surrounded them. The dark curls of her hair reminded him of the wild vines that wrapped themselves around the trees. It was easy to lose himself in her.

He hadn’t been certain it would be that way. Pax knew Carrie wouldn’t have been out of line at all if she’d railed at him when he’d shown up, demanding to know why he’d associated her own lack of a relationship with her work. After all, he was the one who’d pulled her into his arms and made love to her on the rug and then never said another word about it, as though that evening had never happened.

But neither had she.

He adjusted his grip on the compact, battery-operated chainsaw he’d picked for this particular expedition. They wouldn’t be felling a full-sized tree, after all. This would likely be either a thick vine or a branch, one that had been forced by the elements to grow anything but straight. It wouldn’t take much to cut through the few inches of diameter they’d need for a handrail.

“It’s my family’s property,” he finally answered, realizing he was getting so lost in his thoughts, he was hardly a part of reality anymore. Carrie had that effect on him. “We’ve owned it for generations. We’re right on the border of it here, where it adjoins some neighboring land, but we own everything else you can see.” He swung his arms to indicate most of the panorama.

He could tell her. It was a more tempting thought now that they were out there alone, with nothing but the wilderness around them. He could tell her right then and there exactly why he’d focused only on the house and the necessary repairs instead of the energy that crackled so determinedly between them. Pax opened his mouth, wondering what might happen if he summoned the words. They’d start, and then he’d never be able to stop them. And what would she do? Laugh at him, probably. “I can’t love you because I’m not human” sounded like the sorriest excuse in the book. And then what? She’d think he was crazy, and she’d hire someone else to finish the house for her. What would be his excuse to see her then?

The space between her brows scrunched together a bit, something he noticed she did when she was thinking. “I’m sorry to ask a question like this, but why do you have so much wooded land here if you’re in the logging industry?”

“No, it’s okay.
